With his book “Inside Islam: What is preached in Germany’s mosques” published in March 2017, moderator Constantin Schreiber sparked a controversy. He visited mosques in Germany for half a year to document and translate the Friday sermons. The result: Many mosques preach very conservative and even problematic content, often the divisiveness is in the foreground and the connection to the reality of life in Muslims living in Germany is lacking. Critics of the report accuse Schreiber to paint a one-sided and too negative picture on the basis of a small section of the German mosques.
What conclusions can and should be drawn from Constantin Schreiber’s personal observations? What concrete experiences did he make during his visits? What were especially positive, especially negative experiences when meeting visitors and imams? What is his opinion of the criticism of his report and with what considerations has he researched? What do his results mean for the discussion about the role of Muslim religious communities in Germany? We discussed these and other questions with Constantin Schreiber and Critic of his book.
