In times of crisis, the European Union is under pressure to evolve. In a globalized world, the national is too small to assert itself, while the regional is experiencing political empowerment. This level of politics is closer to the citizen, less complicated decisions can be better understood. The concept of a “Europe of the Regions”, which would give regions greater autonomy and more rights within the European Union, has been part of discussions on the future of the EU for a long time.
Questions that students have repeatedly asked us in the Europe Understanding courses are: How do federal states act in the multi-level system of the EU? Can a focus on (cross-border) regions bring the EU closer to the citizens? Which competencies should be exercised regionally or supranationally? And what about the idea of a “Europe of the Regions”? We discussed this topic with you and Dr. Stephan Holthoff-Pförtner.
