“Democracies live off public debate and criticism. Anyone who polishes or even incites uncomfortable journalists and casts doubt on the credibility of the media deliberately destroys the foundations of a democratic society,” said Stern’s long-time correspondent in Moscow and Washington and ROG executive spokeswoman Katja Gloger. Media-hostile hate speech as a state program has long ceased to be restricted to repressive regimes such as those in Turkey or Egypt, where governments defame and persecute critical journalists as “traitors” and “terrorists”. More and more democratically elected governments are questioning the freedom of the media and thus one of the foundations of any pluralistic society, blatantly discrediting critical media as enemies, as well as US President Trump with his image of “fake news media”. But even in European countries, the hostility to journalists is increasing.

Why are journalists arrested again and again, especially in countries such as Turkey, and why does the Federal Government seem so powerless? How does “Reporters Without Borders” assess the state of press freedom in European countries? Which tendencies can be identified, where should be counteracted? How can young people participate in the fight for freedom of expression? We would like to discuss these and other questions with Katja Gloger and you.

We look forward to your participation and ask you to register until 02.10. online (see below) or by e-mail.
