Asfa-Wossen Asserate, born in 1948 in Addis Ababa, is the grandnephew of the last Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie. He lives as a business consultant and author in Frankfurt am Main. His books “Manieren” (2003) and “Draußen nur Kännchen” (2010) made him widely known about the peculiarities of German manners. His latest book, “The New Migration of Nations: Who Wants to Preserve Europe Must Save Africa” (2016), sheds light on relations between Europe and Africa.
He referes to the crises of the continent, in which Europe also plays a role: Western trade barriers and agricultural protections cause Africa to lose twice as much as it receives in development aid. In addition, it can often be observed how rulers are courted. Especially those who the continent needs most for its development see no other alternative than to turn their backs on their homeland and thus exacerbate the situation on the ground. European states would have to fundamentally change their Africa policy, treat Africa as a partner and specifically support those states that are building democratic structures and investing in their youth, said Asfa-Wossen Asserate.
What does the European policy on Africa currently look like, what are the major points of criticism to name specifically? Which steps should Germany and the EU consider first? How do the people of the African continent see their relationship to Europe? We discussed these and other questions with you and Dr. Prince Asfa-Wossen Asserate.
