With this event we reminded of the great German and European politician, the architects of the new Ostpolitik and Willy Brandt’s closest friend, Egon Bahr would have been 96 years old on 18 March 2018.

A few weeks before his death Egon Bahr gave his last big speech in Moscow, among others in front of his longtime political companion Mikhail Gorbachev. The occasion of the speech on July 21st 2015 was the presentation of the Russian edition of the book “Am Abgrund. Pamphlet for a different approach to Russia” by Wilfried Scharnagl. Based on the crisis in Ukraine, Bahr talks about the role of Russia and the relationship with Europe and the US, then under President Obama. He promotes a new German Ostpolitik and the one-sided reduction of sanctions against Russia.

Matthias Platzeck commented on the speech from today’s perspective and put it into a current context.

This event took place in German!
