Triggered by the numerous allegations of abuse against the producer Harvey Weinstein, just under a year ago, countless women and men around the world expressed their solidarity under the hashtag #MeToo and reported on their experiences with abuse, harassment and assaults. The resulting debate over abuse of power and sexualized violence, especially against women, has also become an issue in the European Parliament. MEP Terry Reintke herself reported on an incident and launched a petition to the President of the European Commission requesting the Commission to present a directive against violence against women. She was one of the women honored by the US magazine, Time ‘2017 as’ Person of the Year’.
The charge of a patriarchal policy that downplaying or ignoring such incidents is not new, but there are new and growing counter-movements: for example, the Swedish government already committed itself to a comprehensive feminist policy in 2014. Especially the credo of a feminist foreign policy, which i.a. The diplomatic relations with states dependent on their degree of gender equality and minorities could become the model for the whole of Europe.
To what extent is the European Parliament involved in the fight for equal rights for groups of people in society? What does “feminist (foreign) policy” include and how realistic is implementation at European level? Does the fight for equality through the #metoo debate gain an emotional boost with a politicizing effect? And what consequences did the debate have for the work in Parliament? We would like to discuss these and other questions with you and Terry Reintke. The event will be moderated by Kristina Lunz from the Center for Feminist Foreign Policy.
We look forward to your participation and ask you to register by 10.10. online (see below) or by e-mail.
